It's probably impossible to count how often this picks up a half
point because the benefit is spread to the other moves, but when
it loses because of this it is completely obvious.

The other benefit is it takes away thinking on the opponents time
just when it's likely to benefit the opponent.  I wonder how often
Rebel (for example) might have won a game because of this and it
goes completely unoticed?

But the other side of the coin of course is that you are always
taking a chance.  In my opinion a good obvious move algorithm
should not respond too quickly but still take at least 1/4 the
time or even more.
