Tiger/Fritz etc. are a lot stronger in Comp/Comp than, for example, crafty.

I see absolutely no reason to doubt Christophe when he says that he uses some
very different search techniques.

That doesnt mean that some very bright amateurs who are willing to spend a lot
of time ("almost pros") for years can get as good, and then maybe turn
professional :)
