It doesn't sound bad at all, it sounds like a real problem.

When I first encountered my Chess Challenger 7, I had to play for an endgame to
win, even on the wimpiest level, and it took me quite a few losses to figure out
how to do this successfully.

I can understand how a younger kid would have more trouble with faster machines.

I would hate to think that the only way to dumb these machines down is to give
away pieces though.  I have a real problem with that.  I think that the best
situation would be what I had with that Chess Challenger 7, where I would have
to see the pawn fork at least, I wouldn't have to simply recapture a piece that
had randomly moved itself to an unprotected square or sacrificed itself for a
pawn for no reason.

Easier said than done though.
