The easiest thing is to download the freeware version from
the author's home page:

http://users.cybercity.dk/~bst10651/

The freeware version has relatively few limitations compared to
the commercial version - it is full strength, and save enabled.
The main restrictions are:
- number of visible games in a database limited to 1,000
- diagram printing from database disabled
- number of endgame tablebases supplied is reduced.

As far as the strength goes - pretty good:
but not as strong as HIARCS 6.0 Mac.

Whether Sigma Chess or MacChess 4.0 are stronger is murky -
on problem tests, MacChess 4.0 did slightly better. However,
the Sigma Chess author said:

" Over the last few days I have played a 20 game blitz match between
Sigma Chess 4.0 and MacChess 4.0 PPC on my 132 MHz PowerMac 7600.
Sigma won 11 - 9."

The statistical dispersion on a match with so few games is pretty
wide, but Sigma Chess (written in 680X0 assembler) was at quite
a handicap here, since it was running without benefit of Speed Doubler,
which more than doubled its speed when I used it.
