I disagree, in a way your are only as good as your worst move. Most players believe they have very good positional understanding, and when they lose a game it is certainly _never_ because the they where outplayed on the positional level ;) It is very easy to learn all the basic ideas of pawnstructure, king safety pawn races etc., the hard part is knowing when to break the rules, when to defend, when to attact and when you have sufficient compensation for e.g. material loss etc... This all relates closely to tactics, you only need 1 good line in the tree to make it work. -S.
