I disagree with your opinion. If one's hobby is constantly comparing -or even better pinning down definitive- playing strenght of computer chess programs with all kinds of tests, benchmarks and time controls, and discussing this here day in day out, filling up the board, I suppose that *is* a nice hobby for a lot of - if not most - people here, and *makes* them feel good. I agree however that the development of a wide range of playing programs with different styles should be guarded, as it is both fun for the the same wide variety of users, *and* can lead to unexpected developments in computer chess. OTOH you could argue that it is not so much "unimportant" as well as "dangerous". If a program is definitely benchmarked as "strongest" the place would become a lot more silent here. Maybe the quality of the content would rise, and the trolls would be bored to death, but _maybe_ that's not what we want deep inside. J.
