Excalibur will also be introducing two handhelds this summer. In July will be
Chess Station. A sleek handheld that docks with a chessboard. August will see
the debut of Talking LCD Chess. At first I wasn't very interested in this
product...but I just got done using a prototype (for the past couple of weeks)
and I really like what I see.

My web site provides photos on these units. My new products page is at:

The new Talking LCD Chess unit will have all new strength levels. Instead of
73 fixed time levels as in the original unit, the new units allow you to select
levels based on ply depth (1 to 8) as well as several various time control
methods such as Game/30 or 40 moves/2 hours, etc. Talking LCD Chess has 3,000
opening book moves compared with 250 on the older units. The processor is also
faster: 8 MHz versus 6 MHz for the original Excalibur handheld.

True the Excaliburs are no match for strong programs (like Christophe Theron's
Chess Tiger). But for those who chess strength is below say 1700 Elo...these
units are a great bargain and can provide years of challenge.

As for Chess Tiger, it is my favorite "super strong" handheld chess program.
(I've never bothered with a PocketPC as the battery life doesn't allow for many
long games.) I especially like the frequent updates and improvements that
Christophe releases for Chess Tiger. If you're looking for a super strong
ultimate handheld...it's Chess Tiger on a PalmOS-based unit.
