I don't give respect based on what someone has done for computer chess. That's
not how respect is earned. I respect Bob because I think he's a good guy, not
because he has contributed to computer chess. I respect Bruce because he is
always level headed (this is another perfect example), and not because he has
produced a strong engine in Ferret or because he has provided very good
resources for learning about computer chess on his website. Apart from seeing
Mogens' name on the top of the Winboard Forum, I have no idea who he is, so I
have no opinion of him except based upon what I read from him. When (in my mind)
Kevin seemed like he was the good guy and Mogens was calling him on his bluff,
it seemed rather bullyish, and since that's about the extent of my dealings with
him, my opinion of him wasn't very high.

Do you respect Bobby Fischer? I don't. He's done more for chess in America than
any other player ever, and he's right up there in terms of improving chess
worldwide, getting higher prizes and such. That doesn't mean I have respect for
him, because those things aren't what draws respect out of people. I used to not
respect Kasparov because he didn't seem to be doing anything to make chess
better all around, but rather promoting himself. Lately, while he may not be
entirely the generous man, he's at least making an effort to put the chess
community before himself, and so I have more respect for him. All of that is
completely independent from anything he has done over a chess board.

That's how it seemed at the time. Hate mail from Europeans, Europeans kicking
the North American while he was down. Obviously I was blind to what was really
going on, and they weren't as gullable as I, but that's how I saw it at the
time. Like the Euros wanted to snuff out any chance of there being a tournament
outside of Europe. Looking back on it, yes, it's a little "out there".

As far as doing research about someone before I call them on something, I don't
think it makes a difference. If a new guy says something stupid or an old timer
says something stupid, it doesn't make much difference to me. If a guy has
increased interest in computer chess by 1000% and he beats his wife, I have no
respect for him (I'm not implying anyone beats their wife, just making an
example).
