If you want to learn chess, turn off your computer, and work intensively with
books. Just studying Alekhine's games for example, is worth countless hours of
online practice.

If you want to practice what you've learned, participate in a real tournament
(offline!). Online tournaments never have the intensity and pressure of real
tournaments. Only in one 8 hour tournament match, you'll learn more than
participating in many online tournaments.

Of course computers can be used alongside, but they should never become the
dominant mean of practice. By playing online, you can become a good blitz
player, but never a real good player...
