You may wish to consider taking the money you would have used on purchasing
chess books and using that money, instead, to purchase some chess tutorial
software.  Playing with that software might be a lot more fun, and you would
learn "chess middlegame" at the same time.

Someone else will have to identify the software which is the best suited to your
purpose and current playing strength.
