The newest GCC versions (3.x and higher) are a big step up from the older 2.9x
series.  You will have to be of excellent quality to surpass it.  Only a few
commercial compilers can do it.   I think the latest GCC is better than some of
the older commercial compilers like Watcom and Borland.
