What ends up happening is that prune out a lot of sub-trees where it appears
that one side is wiping out the other side.

If you are up a rook, and you are still up a rook even if you give the opponent
two moves in a row, you are probably up a rook for real.  You will find cases
where you are *not* up a rook for real, but these should be rare.

In computer chess, you try not to throw the baby out with the bath water, but
you are willing to throw out the occasional baby if the rest of them end up
being much happier :-)
