Go up one level in this thread

The database included with Fritz 6 is very large, so I doubt that you'll need
anything else. Of course, the newest games aren't included, but I assume that
since you haven't played chess for many years you'll have more than enough to
look at with the 319900 old games. If you really do want to check out the latest
games, go to http://www.chesscenter.com/twic/twicp.html and download the games
in column 3.

If you want to play through a game, double click on a game in the database
window, which will load the game into the main window. Then you can move
forwards through the game by pressing the right arrow key (or backwards by
pressing the left arrow).

If you want to look for games with a particular opening, in the database window
click on the "Openings" tab. The games are presented in a pseudo-directory
format, the root directory containing A, B, C, D and E, which correspond to the
Informator openings keys. By double clicking on a "directory" you can further
specify the opening you want, or by clicking on ".." you can go up a level. At
the deepest level you will have all the games listed that correspond to the
opening you have chosen. Then just double click on a particular game to load it,
etc.

There is no reason to get an earlier version. Fritz 6's GUI is far superior to
the previous versions. All the newer Chessbase engines run within Fritz 6. The
main advantages of the newer versions are: Fritz 7 allows you to run UCI
engines; Fritz 8 has additional features for opening training.

If you want to play games against the computer and Fritz is too strong for you,
there are several things you could try:

1. Load a weaker engine. Try BamBam from
http://www.chessbase.com/download/index.asp?cat=Engines

2. Play games in "Friend Mode" (Game --> Levels --> Friend Mode). In this level
Fritz will try to adjust itself to your playing strength. It will probably take
about 10 games to get to a reasonable strength, not too strong and not too weak.

3. Try setting a fixed search depth (Game --> Levels --> Fixed Depth). In my
experience, setting a low level makes Fritz irrational, sometimes playing
brilliantly, sometimes making silly blunders, but the blunders are very "human".

4. There is also a "Handicap Mode", but I don't recommend it.

I hope this will help you :)
