On the contrary, perhaps there should be more of this sort of thing -
(especially on RGCC).  I have a theory that if everyone knew more about each
other as people (real personalities with feelings, rather than just disembodied
points of view) we would treat each other better when we post.

I don't subscribe to the view that anything not directly connected with computer
chess is "off topic" and innappropriate.  If you go to a chess club in a town
hall, you dont talk only about chess.  You also discuss your car, or the weather
or your job with the other members - enjoying their company because you have an
interest in common.  If a "real world" club disapproved of discussing anything
"off-topic" at club meetings, I'd leave !

RGCC seems to be one of the most "disfunctional" groups on the net.  One of the
best is a flute mailing list that my girlfriend subscribes to.  It's about
10%-20% on-topic - but everyone knows the name of everyone elses cats; and it
seems to work all the better for that.

Just some random thoughts....
