List plays through an adapter as do most other engines (except Fritz and Crafty, Fritz being the only "true native", and Crafty being adapted to the Chessbase GUI and compiled by Chessbase staff). As Amir Ban and Uli Türke pointed out, Chessbase agrees on a specific interface with the programmer - this was the case with Junior, Shredder, Hiarcs, Tiger(s), all Young Talents, and List (the ".eng" files contain the adapter).
