My first thought was you should check out iterative deepening. I don't see how your idea could work. As usual, the devil is in the details. For instance, how will your engine decide which three moves to keep, even at ply 10 or ply 15? It could work just great, if only you had an evaluation function to consistently keep the best three moves. A magic wand from the tinkerbell, or a spell from the wicked witch of the East, should really come in handy. Laying down such a restrictive forward pruning rule, without a fantastic evaluation function is something I don't see ever working. YMMV dave
