PV means principle variation, or primary variation. In other words, it's the
main line. Shredder has been known to produce very good first moves, but the
rest of the moves are kind of silly sometimes. For instance, consider this game:

[Event ""]
[Site ""]
[Date "2004.03.14"]
[Round "?"]
[White "-"]
[Black "-"]
[Result "1-0"]

1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. e3 e6 4. Bd3 Bd6 5. O-O O-O 6. Re1 c5 7. c3 Nc6 8. Nbd2
c4 9. Bc2 Bd7 10. e4 dxe4 11. Nxe4 Nxe4 12. Bxe4 Re8 13. Bxh7+ Kxh7 14. Ng5+
Kh8 15. Qh5+ Kg8 16. Qxf7+ Kh8 17. Qh5+ Kg8 18. Qh7+ Kf8 19. Qh8+ Ke7 20. Qxg7#
1-0

After black's 14th move, white has a mate in 6. Here is what Fritz thinks about
this.

[D]r2qr2k/pp1b1pp1/2nbp3/6N1/2pP4/2P5/PP3PPP/R1BQR1K1 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Fritz 8:

15.Qh5+ Kg8 16.Qxf7+ Kh8 17.Qh5+ Kg8 18.Qh7+ Kf8 19.Qh8+ Ke7 20.Qxg7#
  +- (#6) Depth: 3/16 00:00:00

Frits gives the correct variation in its analysis. Shredder's main line will
have the correct first move, but sometimes the moves after that are silly.
Shredder's main line in this position might look like (just a made up example):

15. Qh5+ Kg8 16. Qh6 gxh6 17. Re5 Bxe5 18. Bf4 hxg5 19. Kh1 Bxf4 20. Rd1
  +- (#6) Depth: 3/16 00:00:00

That line obviously does not lead to mate, and those moves are silly. Shredder
will always play what it thinks is the best move though (not these silly moves
it predicts).
