I use a longer look-back.  I don't remember if it's set to 3 days or 7 days, but
anyway, it's a lot tougher to miss a thread that is just short.  I just select
the range from filter, and bookmark the resulting page.  You can use this
bookmark over and over, and many more messages will be visible.

This is entirely adequate for me.  Even if it's not for you, it might be a good
"workaround" until something that appeals to you more comes around.
