I am able to read most MS Office formats. But when somebody sends me a file in
MS proprietary format I generally do not even try to open it and ask him/her to
resend the file in a "clean" format, such as RTF, CSV or HTML.

That's not really the problem. The problem is about abuse of power by one
company that has repeatedly proven that it does not hesitate to break the law
whenever it sees an opportunity to get more control over the world. Now that a
strong alternative exists, why are we still giving our money and support to the
abuser?
