Uli
i do not give my reply as a chess programmer
only as a collector of dedicated chess computers

every computer i ever owned that Employed the Shannon A B selective search
algorithm and every manual and article i ever read on the subject suggests that
if you use the Brute force option the computer will rarely miss any tactical
shots because under this search method the computer will do a "full width"
search but not go out many ply
under" Selective search "the computer will look at increased ply but not search
each ply to a great width

therefore occassinaly, on Selective Search ,a dedicated unit can be surprised by
a missed tactical response 3- 4 plys deep

this rarely occurs on Brute Force searchs

you must remember with dedicated units we are talking about machines running at
perhaps 20-30 Mhz on 68000 processors

perhaps this is not the same for PC programs running at 1000 times faster then
this

Steve
