Hello,

What you describe can be done with *all* open source engines. Therefore, you can
pick engines whose source code has been released under _open source_ licenses
and use them without problems.

Only problem is when the engine's source is released under a license which is
not open source, in that case you need to consult the author. Anyhow, here is a
list of engines which you can use without problems

1. Crafty
2. Phalanx
3. Arasan
4. Natwarlal (My own engine)
5. faile
6. Sjeng free 11.2
7. Beowulf
8. Gnuchess (of course!!)
9. Pepito

Should be enough for starters :)
I don't know what license crafty has been released under, but all the others are
released under open source licenses except Arasan. However, Arasan's author
allows free distribution in his license.

Best,
Pallav
