I suspect GMs do a lot more preparation than is readily evident. The amount of knowledge most GMs have is virtually incomprehensible to most people. I would guess that if you asked any 2500+ GM who is currently playing regularly he could probably tell you in surprising detail what every other comparable GM plays. Preparation for an open tournament can then be compressed into a couple hours with a database. It's obviously not as complete as when they know in advance who they'll be playing, but I suspect it's a lot better than most people imagine. Paul
