This is called a Pawn promotion. Once the pawn has been promoted. The turn passes to the opponent and he is free to capture it if he can or not capture it. Whether or not it is capturable has no effect on the legality of such Pawn moves. Note that by such promotions, it is possible to have more than the usual 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops or 2 Knights of the same color even though most chess sets do not support this, but it is rare enough to justify their not supporting this. By the way you phrased your query, it sounds like you were not replacing the pawn by another piece, which represents an uncompleted move, which is illegal.
