where you will find the Laws of Chess, which are the rules governing the play of

The section the specificly bears on pawn promotion is 3.7e

Note that in informal play not all of these rules are strictly adhered to of
course. These rules represent formal play and are the ones used by any player
involved in a tournament including professional players. In short, these are the
official rules of the game of chess.
