earlier in the week there was a MINT IN BOX Tasc R40(V2.5)-SB30 which was
offered on Ebay with a "BUY NOW" of only $50!!

well if the seller is honorable there is no need to place the early bid in the
first place
and if not honorable then i think the early bid wont really matter
 however it might make a difference to some sellers..
as i mentioned somewhere along the thread here.. i have seen auctions closed
with many bidders on board

i wasnt being all that serious, but it is true that collectors do compete
against each other as well and would tack on another 5%-10% on a bid just to
know they won it from a competitor

this is only human nature and very few Collectors have my "Spock like" ability
to seperate all human emotion from the cold calculations necessary in
formulating ones bidding price
