I, like Dick have thought the same in an auction for a nice chess computer where no bids have been placed. If you bid you do give away your interest but it might prevent the seller from selling off E-Bay as a bid has been placed (If the seller is honourable). If another collector like yourself is interested then this shouldn't matter, as you will place your max bid at the end anyway. I notice you say you would increase your max bid if you saw another well-known collector bidding, why? Surely it is your maximum bid and you are not prepared to go over this price.
