Bruce,

What you say sounds reasonable, but not everyone on this forum is reasonable.
What do the moderators do for your #2 when they decide to delete an entire
thread. Do they email everyone involved? And then we still have the same
problem of threads being deleted and everyone did not read them and everyone has
an opinion, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum.

Sending an email to everyone concerned (or explaining their actions at all in a
single post) is a lot more process baggage than what I proposed. Creating a post
with the subject ENOUGH!!! is NOT a lot of process baggage. However, it has the
advantage of bringing the inappropriate posts to the attention of the posters
(and the rest of the members) and it also allows everyone to read the posts so
that there is none of the Orwellian aspect to it that you dislike.

From my point of view (and I know you disagree), the moderators have been doing
the 3 things that you propose (with the exception of #2 when they delete an
entire thread, I think that some people have such thin skins that they take
practically everything stated as per your #1 as an offense). So, I do not see
where your proposal changes anything from the current status quo. Some people
like myself think the moderators have been trying real hard and have been doing
a good job and feel that the job is basically thankless in the first place.
Others feel differently.

There would usually be no need to explain why a moderator posted ENOUGH!!!. They
could even write a small blurb if they did not think it obvious enough. The
ENOUGH!!! post along with the original post still being there for all to read
would be sufficient in most cases.

And since Steve would have the final authority to delete posts, I think most
everyone would say that he has the RIGHT to do that with whatever post he deems
necessary here (and I have not found anyone who thinks that Steve is
unreasonable).

So, it would seem to me that my proposal may increase a little of Steve's
workload, but not overly so (the moderators could Email him when posts are way
out of hand, but for the most part, threads should die out on their own). And
the moderators job should become easier as well.

My proposal is not perfect either. Even with such a scheme, there will be people
posting that the moderators do it too often and others posting that the
moderators do not do it enough. Nothing will satisfy everyone. That's life. We
learn to live with it.

KarinsDad :)
