Dave also mentioned the rating inflation. I do not know the formulas that
changed (I could not find them on the FIDE webpage), so if someone knows them,
please post them.

However, it can probably be seen from Karpov's 2705 when he was the number one
challenger to Fischer to his highest rating of 2760 (25 points below Fischer's
best) in 1993 and at the age of 42, that there is probably a rating inflation
responsible.

People who are world champion (such as Tal, Spassky, Petosian, and Smyslov) do
not have maximum lifetime ratings in the 2680-2700 range and then there are
suddenly 9 to 13 players in the world 20 to 30 years later who consistently
maintain ratings higher than those of the previous world champions.
