Graham, I also have a 2100 and agree that it's a great machine but the lid is actually removable. You simply pull the two small knurled knobs at each end of the lid hinge. They are spring loaded and the lid pops right off. It's designed that way for the very reason you mentioned. I too found the black pieces a problem at that size. A simple solution I used was to spray paint them red. Not a tournament standard colour but you'd be amazed at the difference in visibility that made. Dave
