A famous chess store in Paris (now defunct), created a challenge in order to test both the Par Excellence and later the Mach III when it came out. The match was done against a wide range of players in which colors were alternated. The Par Excellence achieved a rating of 1850 Elo (French national rating) and the Mach III was considered a phenomenon by being the first program to break the then mythical barrier of 2000 with a performance of 2036 at the time (if memory serves). It was the first commercially available chess playing machine to be classified as a 1st category player, which in France is a player rated between 2000 and 2200. Albert Silver > > > > >Len
