The point is not karpov's rating but the level of him today.

If you have more than 2700 and lose some games your performance may be 2600 but
your rating can decrease only to 2700.

karpov won anand one year ago when he had unfair advantage(anand was tired after
playing many games).

karpov is today older and his ability today is not the same as some years ago so
it is logical to assume that his real ability is closer to 2600.

Another point is that the game were not 120/40 but 90/40+30/game.

It is an important fact because karpov got a clear advantage in the game and
maybe he could win if he had more time on the clock.
