Who can Kasparov play that will generate great interest? Anand is more popular than Shirov, but I think the conventional wisdom is that Kasparov will win without too much trouble. After he crushes Anand, where is the next big money match? Kasparov vs. The World generated great interest, so MS knows for sure what Kasparov's name can bring. The only other match that will generate huge interest (read:$$$) is Kasparov against the world's best computer. In my view it's foolish for him not to pursue this idea, and so one naturally looks for other reasons. As you can say many people will simply believe that Kasparov is afraid of such a machine. I am hoping that there has simply been a lack of communication, and that 1) Kasparov will give serious consideration to create this match, and 2) Hsu will not give up yet based on some lack of communication with Kasparov's manager. IMO he should at least speak to Kasparov himself before shelving his life's work.
