Hi Les,

I think everyone has answered the question for you, but I will summarize:

N = 20
B = 20
R = 20
Q = 18

Obviously, this cannot be all of the same board and to achieves these numbers,
pieces must be captured (in order for the pawns to slip past each other).

But, part of your paragraph indicates that you may also be asking the maximum
number of major pieces on a board. This is 26 (14 original ones plus 12 promoted
pawns where 4 pawns where captured by other pawns). This is different than the
maximum number of pieces of a given type and is what causes the 20 byte
compression problems (well, actually, not knowing how many pawns were promoted
and whether they slipped past the opposing pawn structure via capturing pawns or
pieces is the real problem). And the 12 promoted pawns could range anywhere from
8 white and 4 black through 4 white and 8 black.

Hope this helps. If not, let us all know.

KarinsDad :)
