So you need about half the length. This doesn't take into account the possibility of the substring occurring right in the part where you put the two together, so you will need a few more than half (but not more than half+x). On my Casio fx-something, bought in 1987, this still shows up as -[E- :) As for other "tricks of the trade", you haven't told what the trade is... Are you solving chess with fuzzy logic or something?
