Genius, Shredder, Hiarcs, Rebel, and ChessMaster are pretty good at this.
The complaint was that this led to to many draws and not enough attacking,
people always complained that they wanted more human like play, even if
that ment that the computer got clobbered from time to time.  I vote for
solid play.  A draw and king protection is not boring to me.  Let your
human opponent make the mistake.  Draws are not boring to me.  :)

Wait, Deep Junior and all the others have some very impressive wins
against GM's.  More wins than losses against FIDE rated players by
my count.  :)  The monsters have earned every point they have.  They
are quite good and the programmers and hardware engineers should be
proud of the beast!  They are easily GM strength.   :)
I guess people just want either win all or loose all.  :)
