>What good >would these obscene practices have against a program that plays a >different line every time ? > >Amir Depends. If a plays limited, and b plays variance, than it could be good for b. But what if b is also LEARNING and tries to play only the WON lines. Then both program are determinated on several "good" lines. I prefer a program that plays almost anything. But there is a point in saying that a program that plays narrow/few openings is better to control by the opening-book-cook. Whatever. I don't want to test the book, I want to see differences between the engines. I will force special openings to find out myself. But - if the ssdf-guys do not take a look on mean opening-cooking, their list will be destroyed... These effects can be proven by anybody having an autoplayer pair. You will ALL see these senseless games where hiarcs computes from the 10th move and Mchess7 is IN BOOK until 37 moves and than the autoplayer-game continues like Sandro or whoever has prepared. I would appreciate programs playing all kinds of different openings and have a great variance, maybe also gambit-openings or weird openings, although this would maybe decrease the strength a little. Will junior answer to the killer-book discussion with VARIANCE ?? This would be a nice answer !!! please - try it out with the junior engine yourself how the cooking will decrease juniors elo AFTER it was looked up by all other programs.
