hi tim:
if you are in no immediate rush, you ought to wait for a couple of months
because by then dual athlon systems will be available.(you'll need ddram
though)(right now the best you can get is a single athlon 1.33 or a dual
pentium3 (1ghz x 2)(with a dual system you can play progs vs progs permanent
brain on on a single computer or run deep shredder in all its glory!)

dont think of buying now and upgrading later as the motherboard, memory, power
supply case etc (in fact almost every thing will be different)

also with the current low prices, 256 or even 512 ram would be worth cosidering.

separate dvd rom (pioneer x 16 dvd)and cd/rw (32/12/10 burn proof)drives will be
cheaper with better performance-than a combo drive

as far as hard drive's are concerned unless you wife wants to store all the
worlds movies on 1 drive perhaps the money saved by going in for a smaller drive
(choose a 7200rpm ultra ata 100 spec) would be better spent on a larger monitor
or more ram.

unless your wife wants to play a lot of games win 2000 is the way to go for
chess programmes-and even then you could have a dual boot with win98 and 2000

hope your wife likes this type of machine

btw this machine would be ok for chess as well!
