On what grounds >do you say it's unfathomably lame? It's not unfathomably lame for everything. It's unfathomably lame for real-time systems, chess programs, and performance critical applications. Actually, I'm not a VB hater or a Java hater. Those would be my language of choice for a quick front end application. But (for instance) if you were to write a web server in Java, I think you are probably ready for the looney bin.
