Hi John, I have had some significant experience in teaching chess to children. I think that just about any time and energy you spend in that area is "doing it right." Back when I was active in teaching chess, there were no computer programs to help, so my first-hand experience may be somewhat out of date, but I know that spending the "quality time" is what matters most. With your son starting so early, he has plenty of time to become a very strong player (if he wishes, of course). The earlier the start, the greater the potential, all other things being equal. Chessmaster is a very good tool, especially for the price. There are also good books, videos, organizations, clubs, etc., and good web sites for helping a child learn, enjoy, and improve at chess. I am about to leave my house, so I don't have the time to search out the details right now, but you might start with a Google.com search. You and your son might also enjoy watching the documentary "Chess Kids", which has played on PBS and can be bought on video tape. And don't forget the Hollywood movie, "Searching for Bobby Fischer," which starred some big-name actors. These movies don't teach chess per se, but they are encouraging and enjoyable. I was not lucky enough to have a parent who played chess when I was a child. I think a parent and child enjoying chess together is a great thing for both of them, and wish you years and years of chess happiness with your son! -Roy Eassa, Massachusetts, USA On December 30, 2001 at 12:17:41, John Pahl wrote: >Hi, > Just found this message board today, looks great! >Was wondering what you think about using chessmaster 8000. >Got it for my son (age 6) for x-mas.
