In addition to the answers which were given, I just wanted to add: Keep in mind that tablebases are not always - not in any type of position- an improvement, when they are accessed in the search before a tablebase position is actually reached in the game. (I think they probably are an improvement in more than 50% of the cases, but not very near to 100%). If your GUI allows to configure *more than one* TB directory, I suggest to put all 4 piece TBs in one, a subset of 5 piece TBs in another (i.e. RN-R, RB-R, or all R?-R), and the rest in the third directory. By this, you would be more flexible to choose from, how many TBs you want to use in analysis or in games etc. (by reconfiguring as desired). An example where you will most probably notice, that an engine NOT using TBs will be more successful than with TBs. To try it, you should use the same engine for White and Black, or engines of very similar strength, and switch sides also of course (IOW, at least 2 or 4 games). Let one engine play with, and the other without TBs starting from this position. Later, maybe some experts here can explain to you why the engine without TBs was better, and give related advise): Von Gottschall,H - Nimzowitsch,A [C00] Hannover Hannover (2), 1926 [D]3R4/1p6/2b5/2P1k2p/p3p2P/P6r/1P2KB2/8 b - - 0 43 Regards, M.Scheidl
