Huge cache is not necessary.  Crafty's SMP performance is similar whether it
is on a quad pentium pro 200mhz, quad xeon/400, quad xeon/550 or my quad
xeon/700.  The SMP "loss" is only a few percent per cpu added.  The P6/200
quad has the normal 256K L2 cache.  the xeon 400's and 550's have 512K, while
my 700's have 1024K (I wouldn't have bought the 1024's but that is all that
was available in 700, except for the 2048K chips that are extremely pricey.

Note that all the quads above have classic 4-way memory interleaving, while
duals generally do not.  I think _that_ is the big difference.  Not the L2
cache or anything else.  Just pure memory bandwidth and 4-way interleaving
just about quadruples thruput...
