Servomotors are used.

An under-the-board mechanism like MB/Fidelity used is much simpler than an
external, more general purpose arm.  But it requires a special board and special
pieces and that would add to the cost.

Some people may prefer, or already have a DGT board and would be more interested
in an accessory locomotor arm than buying yet another specialized board and set.
