I'm also using the Shredder 9.1 Classic GUI with Rybka 1.0 Beta and it works
fine, as does Fruit 2.2.1, Toga II 1.1a, and other UCI engines. Alas they are
getting most of the use now and the Shredder 9.1 UCI engine is getting a much
deserved rest, only for occasional consultation!?

My feeling at this point is that Rybka plays the openings fairly well even
without a book, but any engine needs a little help with the first few moves. It
might only need a book with 5 moves in each line.

I enjoyed, respected, and still use your Shredder opening book that came with
the Shredder 8 CD and the Fritz GUI. It worked fine in the Fritz GUI. I could
clearly see what you recommended in each case. The recommended moves were in
green and included the comment symbols such as "!" and "?". The bad moves were
in red. It was easy to use and consult.

However I have never learned how to access and consult that same kind of useful
information with your opening book that comes with the Shredder 9 UCI Classic
package. The opening book features of that GUI are sadly lacking when compared
with the Fritz GUI. So I always keep the Fritz8 GUI available, so I can manage
my many opening books in .ctg format - the best opening book format I've ever
found. Perhaps I'm overlooking something, but I played around with it for quite
awhile when I first bought the Shredder Classic GUI, and it just isn't suitable
for serious opening books in my opinion. At least it can't handle my big opening
books which have over 3 million chess games. That's the main weakness of that
GUI, which is excellent in most other regards.
