I think trying something completely different is a great idea. I suspect a lot of the "humor" in this trail is due to the previous authors' own insights at their first tries at chess programs. Rapid progress may lead one to believe incredible success lies just ahead. Then the exponential nature of chess rears its ugly head. I hope that you do succeed and produce a world beater. All the NN AI chess programs I have tried are humorous parodies of chess games, so I think at least you may have the best NN type AI design ever made. That, in itself, is quite an achievement.
