There is still the possibility that your system is flawed either by drivers or
compatible components used with your athlon. The Athlon is currently in a
developmental stage where it currently boast off-die level 2 caching which
restricts the capabilites of the processor. This is where Intel enjoys it's
advantage over AMD. Because of Intel's integrated on-die level 2 caching system
it out performs AMD in gaming situations while the Athlon excels in business
applications that are FPU intensive in nature. The roles are reversed now as
AMD was in the past limited to only competing with Intel in the gaming market
and falling short with weak results in the FPU area.

As AMD continues to enhance the Athlon platform, it's next step is to move to an
integrated level 2 caching system, thus introducing the newest processor based
on the K75 architecture code named "Thunderbird". This processor which is
planned to release early late Q3 or Q4 of this year will close the performance
gap with Intel and clearly outperformed any Intel processor on a clock for clock
basis.

So I would lead your attention to reviews discussing the detailed architechture
of the Athlon posted at Tom's Hardware and Anandtech.com's websites. Because
one can't draw conclusion of a general nature based on his or her own computer
setup.
