Unfortunately no G4 is out yet, but IBM has an early version of the
POWER3. Quoting IBM "The target operating frequency is 500+ MHz,
estimated peformance is 30+ SPECint95, 70+ SPECfp95. The POWER3
processor will be at the heart of a 4096-processor RS/6000 SP super
computer. When the system is upgraded with POWER3 processors in 1998, it
will deliver a whopping 3.0 teraFLOPS."

A recent BYTE article discussed the POWER3. I was impressed by the
aggregate cache and memory bandwidth. For example, the chip has a
256-bit L2 cache bus (compared to 64-bit for PCs and Macs).

See http://www.ssd.sscc.ru/library/cpu/ for good info on new chips.
