That's >why one should not exchange the Q. no, i do not have it backwards. i was not talking about B vs N, but about N+Q vs B+Q. the +Q makes all the difference here - this rule is known as "xy's rule", where xy was a very strong player, but i have forgotten who. on the other hand, N+R vs B+R is good for B+R generally speaking. i just wanted to know if you guys have this in your evaluation functions - the result of the banikas-DJ game is secondary to me. i also agree that the pawn ending looks like a draw, and that with 30...Qxb2 black could draw - no objection at all there. but in the diagrammed position he has N+Q vs B+Q and should be looking for more than a draw! cheers martin PS of course these rules are just 'guides to the mind' - i don't want to claim that they always apply, just most of the time...
