For tournaments to be successful, the 50 move rule is a must, IMO. Anything else could be an absolute nightmare! Totally disruptive of the resulting rounds. The FIDE did right by this, in both directions: they tried it out, it didn't work, and they went back to the 50 move rule because it DID work. Important to remember that if the TB says "200 moves to mate", that really means "250 moves to mate" for most humans, if the human can do it all. No tournament could stand up to that kind of regular, long, delays. David
