And the time between the games would help to solve the "fail to understand basic
endgame ideas" problems exactly how?

I don't think they could do a whole lot between the games. I guess they somehow
could fiddle around with parameters so the engine doesn't like to exchange the
queens, but since I don't 'attach' the losses to queen-exchanges too much, I
doubt that would help a whole lot anyway. Also, changing the opening library
substantially wouldn't be possible in this short time, I guess.
