The ram won't make a huge difference either way. It would if your chess program
started swapping, but if it was swapping, processor speed wouldn't make any
difference.

A $1800 AthlonMP 2400 system can almost tie the dual-Xeon 2.8 GHz. It would be
more cost-effective just to build a NUMA system out of 4 such nodes. You'd
probably get about the same speed-up.
